How Online Courses Work

Return to Frequently Asked Questions

How do online courses work?

Although every school will have a slightly different process, the idea of taking courses online is to allow you to fit your school work into your busy schedule. This means that, traditionally, there are no mandatory scheduled meeting times. In most cases, you will receive a course syllabus indicating when materials will be available to you, times that you can discuss topics with other classmates and/or your professor, and when papers and exams are scheduled due. Each online course is usually structured so that there is ample time to gather the required information, study, and take an exam or write a paper, etc.

There is no doubt that this type of learning requires quite a bit of self-discipline! But establishing a plan, once you have your semester's requirements, is usually enough to get the job done.
